Expedition: The New World is a very particular RPG where you play Christopher Columbus who – after speaking with Ferdinand and Isabella, the Catholic Monarchs – decides to set sail for the New World aboard his ships.
The base gameplay is very similar to most roguelikes, giving the player almost total freedom when it comes to making decisions about where to go next. Thus you can navigate in any direction you want, manage your crew, drop anchor on any coast, etc. In fact, you’ll spend most of your time on deck aboard the ship.
After disembarking, Expedition: The New World slightly changes its tone. You have to select which crew members will go ashore and which ones will stay on the ship. Make sure you leave enough people aboard but don’t forget to take enough men with you just in case you run into trouble! The battles play out automatically depending on the skills of the people in your group.
Expedition: The New World is one of those roguelikes with several different visual styles. Before you start playing, you have to choose between many of these styles, including the classic one with ASCII characters.
Expedition: The New World is an epic title that aspires to offer a virtually infinite number of games. Politics, battles, and large-scale wars, religious missions … all these elements make the result nothing short of astonishing.
